어휘 연재 네 번째 글을 올립니다. 단어를 선택하는 기준은 제가 좋아하는 단어이면서 한국사람들이 많이 안 쓰는 단어입니다.

Commendable (칭찬할 만한, 훌륭한)

  • The Obama Administration made a commendable effort to resuscitate the US economy but was met with limited success.
  • Your effort in attending to this matter is commendable.

Precocious (조숙한)

  • A precocious freshman led his high school debate team to victory at the national championships.
  • What a precocious youngster you are.

Prerequisite (필수 조건, 과목 등)

  • Basic math is a prerequisite for any graduate-level calculus class.
  • To learn any language, an interest in the culture is a prerequisite.

Affable (사근사근한, 붙임성 있는)

  • Rich’s affable personality paved the way to his success in the radio business.
  • His affable nature made him a hit with the students.

Hilarious (정말 재미있는)

  • Did you hear the boss’s knock-knock joke? Get him to tell it to you. It’s absolutely hilarious.
  • That John is just hilarious. He’s a riot I tell you, a riot.

Allege (주장하다, 추정하다, 기소하다)

  • Prosecutors allege that bribery is rampant in the senate.
  • After allegedly getting high on hard drugs, the suspect led police on a high-speed chase through downtown.

Rigmarole (번거로운 절차, 유의어: red tape)

  • I wanted to get a visa to China, but I couldn’t handle all the rigmarole.
  • I had to go through a lot of rigmarole to win this contract.

Compelling (설득력 있는, 매료시키는)

  • The defense lawyers made many compelling arguments, but I remain unconvinced of his innocence.
  • What a compelling film!

Ridiculous (어리석은, 터무니없는, 유의어: preposterous, nonsensical, laughable)

  • What a ridiculous excuse!
  • I’m sick and tired of your ridiculous behavior.

Ludicrous (웃기는)

  • He’s proposing we advertise our free English classes by handing out fliers at the subway stations. It’s a ludicrous plan.
  • I can’t decide if his plan is ludicrous or ingenious.

  1. 마이클 선생님, 안녕하세요. 거꾸로 듣다보니 지금 4월의 강의를 듣고 있습니다. 저는 수학을 전공해서 기하학을 배웠는데요. 미국의 대학교에서는 학부에서 수학전공이 아니어도 기하학이 필수인지 궁금합니다. 죄송해요..영어관련 질문이 아니네요..~~;;

      Well, it depends on the school, but most Americans take geometry (기하학) in their first year of high school. I took geometry, algebra, trigonometry and two years of calculus.

    잘 듣고 갑니다. 이번 수업 어려워서 다섯 번은 들어야 할 것 같아요.

  3. Hey, Mike! This is such a great website both for Koreans and English speakers. Thanks for your work! You did a commendable job for everyone who are trying to learn either Korean or English 😛 By the way, I happened to find an error. If you take a look at the first example sentence for the word ‘precocious’, you wrote: “A precocious freshman lead his high school debate team….” And here, shouldn’t it be either ‘leads’ or ‘led’ instead of ‘lead’?(Well, in my opinion, ‘led’ sounds better than ‘leads’ here but anyway.) If I’m wrong, I’d like to know why. I’ll look forward to read your comment on this 😉

    중복 입력된 것이 있어서 살짝 알려드리고 갑니다.

    Ludicrous 부분에 His plan 이 두번 중복되어 있네요^^
    ‘I can’t decide if his plan his plan is ludicrous or ingenious.’

  6. 친구덕에 알게되서 찾아왔었는데, 늘 눈팅만 하다 이제야 감사하다는 인사드립니다.^^ 혹시, 예문과 함께 따라 읽을 수 있게 음성파일 올려주시면 안될까요? 큰소리로 따라 연습하면 단어 뜻도 외우면서 발음과 인토네이션 연습에 도움이 될 것 같아서요. 그냥 소심한 부탁이니 부담(?) 안 갖으셔도 됩니다.^^
