EiK Podcast 71 (제 신문 기사 통해서 공부합시다)
얼마 전에 경주에 다녀온 후 경주의 테디베어 박물관에 대한 기사를 썼는데 이번에 조선일보에 실렸습니다.영어 원어민을 대상으로 글을 쓸 때는 어쩔 수 없이 어려운 표현과 숙어가 많이 들어갈 수밖에 없습니다. 그렇다보니 함께 배울 수 있는 말이 넘쳐납니다.

Gyeongju has always struck me as the ultimate playground for Korean history buffs. Its authenticity is the perfect antidote to Seoul’s recreations, reenactments and reconstructions. But however tantalizing artifacts and ancient relics may be for adults, children tend to require something a bit more animated to bring history alive in their minds.
나는 항상 경주를 한국 역사광들을 위한 최고의 놀이터라고 생각해왔다. 서울에서 볼 수 있는 유적지는 재현과 재건이 주를 이루지만 경주의 정통성은 이에 대한 해독제가 된다. 그러나 고대 유물과 유적지가 어른들의 마음을 아무리 들뜨게 한다고 해도 아이들의 머릿속에 역사가 살아 숨쉬게 하려면 좀 더 생동감 있는 것들이 있어야 할 것 같다.
Having traveled to Gyeongju’s well-known historic sites and their replicas at the Teddy Bear Museum on the same day, it was undeniable that children were more abuzz as they took in the teddy-bear-covered mockups of Shilla heritage than they were at seeing the actual sites. Guess we’ll just have to chalk it up to inscrutable child psychology. At least there’s something in Gyeongju now for the kids to enjoy.
경주의 유명한 유적지와 테디 베어 박물관의 테디 베어 모형을 같은 날 둘러봤다. 아이들은 확실히 실제 역사 유적지보다는 테디 베어로 둘러싸인 신라 유적지의 모형 앞에서 더 큰 환호성을 질렀다. 그걸 어른들의 눈으로는 이해하기 힘든 아이들의 심리라고 치더라도, 적어도 이제 경주에는 아이들이 즐길 만한 것들도 있다.
