1. ‘Most’과 ‘Most of’의 차이점

‘Most of’ 뒤에는 일반 명사(범주, 부류 등을 나타내는 말)가 단독으로 오는 게 아니라 이것을 꾸며주는 제한적인 구절이 와야 합니다. 예를 들어 ‘Most of Koreans like kimchi’ 같은 문장은 안 되고 이때는 ‘Most Koreans like kimchi’처럼 ‘of’ 없이 써야 합니다.
중요한 것은 ‘most of’나 ‘all of’ 뒤에 제한적인 구절이 없이 그냥 일반 범주 이름 (people, Koreans, friends, Seoulites 등)만 오면 안 된다는 것입니다.
예문:
(x) Most of Koreans eat rice.
(o) Most Koreans eat rice.
(x) Most of Americans have never lived in a foreign country.
(o) Most Americans have never lived in a foreign country.
2. ‘그렇게 하지 마’는 영어로 ‘Don’t do like that’ 아닙니다.
(x) Don’t do like that.
(o) Don’t do it like that.
많은 타동사의 경우 뒤에 바로 목적어가 와야 되고 그 사이에 다른 말을 쓰면 안 됩니다. 제일 흔히 쓰는 용법이라면 ‘Do’와 ‘say’도 그렇습니다. 따라서 ‘Don’t do like that’과 ‘Don’t say like that’같은 문장은 문법에 안 맞습니다.
그냥 ‘Don’t do that’과 ‘Don’t say that’라고 하시면 되고 꼭 ‘그렇게’라는 말은 삽입하고 싶으면 ‘Don’t do it that way’과 ‘Don’t say it that way’또는 ‘Don’t say things like that’라고 하시면 됩니다.

3. ‘전’과 ‘후’를 맞게 쓰는 방법

비교의 대상이 없을 때 비교급 표현 (earlier, later, before, after 등)을 쓰면 매우 어색합니다. 15분 이따가 떠나자는 말을 하고 싶으면 떠나는 시각이랑 다른 시각하고 비교하는 게 아니라 그냥 말하는 것이기 때문에 ‘after’나 ‘later’를 쓰면 안 되고 ‘in’을 쓰셔야 합니다.
He arrived 20 minutes ago.
I’ll be there in 30 minutes.
4. 누군가와 결혼했다는 의미로 ‘married with’를 안 씁니다.
(x) He married with a Korean.
(o) He married a Korean.
영어에 ‘결혼하다’에 관련된 표현이 두 가지 있습니다. ‘Get married to someone’와 ‘marry someone’. ‘She married an American’과 ‘She got married to an American’처럼 쓰시면 됩니다. 반면에 ‘She married to an American’과 ‘She got married with an American’은 문법에 안 맞습니다.
He really wanted to marry a French girl, but no one was interested in him.
He really wanted to get married to a French girl, but no one was interested in him.

5. ‘Leave’와 같이 가는 전치사는 ‘to’가 아니라 ‘for’입니다.
(x) I’m leaving to Europe tomorrow.
(o) I’m leaving for Europe tomorrow.
‘Go’와 달리 ‘leave’라는 동사를 쓸 때 ‘for’를 씁니다. 따라서 ‘I’m leaving to America next week’라는 말은 틀리고 ‘I’m leaving for America next week’라고 쓰셔야 됩니다.
