INTRODUCING YOURSELF

Nice meeting you.
Nice to meet you.
It’s so nice to finally meet you.
It’s a pleasure.
It’s such an honor.

I’ve heard so much about you.

A: Hi!
B: Hello.
A: It’s nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard so much about you over the years.
B: Good things, I hope.
A: Well…mostly.

A: What do you do?
B: Well, actually I’m still in college.
A: Oh, yeah? What are you majoring in?
B: I’m majoring in political science with a minor in economics.

(In college) I majored in _________ .
Where did you go to college?

A: Where did you go to school?
B: I did my undergrad at Ohio State and got my master’s at Princeton.

A: Where do your kids go to school?
B: Well, my eldest is at Harvard and our younger boy is at Dartmouth.
A: Wow! Both very good schools. You must be so proud.

A: Where would you like to go to school?
B: If things go according to plan, I’ll be attending Harvard this time next year.
A: That’s a tough school to get into.
B: Well, if that doesn’t pan out, I may do my undergrad at NYU and try Harvard again for my master’s.

학사: bachelor’s (degree)
석사: master’s (degree)
박사: doctorate / Ph.D.
진짜 원어민답게 말하고 싶으면 ‘work’의 더 넓은 의미를 활용해서 ‘graduate work’나 ‘post-doctoral work’라는 표현을 쓰시면 됩니다.

A: I got my bachelor’s at Columbia and did my graduate work at NYU.
B: Oh, really? I did my undergrad at NYU and got my master’s at Columbia.

A: I don’t think my son is college material.
B: Oh, really? Couldn’t convince him to pursue higher education, huh?

영어로 ‘휴학하다’라는 말은 ‘to take a leave of absence’인데 조금 더 편한 영어로 말하자면 ‘to take a semester off’라는 말도 됩니다.

A: I’m kind of burned out on school. I think I may take a leave of absence.
B: Sounds like a good idea. Why don’t you take a few semesters off and tour the world?
