EiK Podcast 80: Similar Expressions Part 2

영어와 한국어의 비슷한 표현을 정리해서 글을 쓰는 것은 정말 오랜만입니다. 이 연재의 첫 글에서 설명했듯이 두 가지 다른 언어에 비슷한 표현이 생길 수 있는 이유는 크게 두 가지가 있습니다. 하나는 사람들이 어느 나라에 살든 같은 인류이니까 드는 생각과 표현 방식이 크게 다를 수 없다는 거죠. 이러한 예를 들면 ‘일석이조’ 같은 말들이 있습니다. 이런 개념을 비슷한 방식으로 표현하는 숙어는 거의 전세계 모든 언어에서 찾을 수 있을 것입니다.
또 한 가지 이유는 세계화되면서 전세계 사람들 사이에서 표현을 수입/수출하는 것이 활성화돼서 원래 없었던 표현이 탄생되는 겁니다. 냉정하게 말하면 주로 일방적으로 영어 표현들을 다른 언어에서 도입하는 것이고, 다른 나라의 말들이 영어에 들어오는 경우는 비교적 드뭅니다.
아래 표현들은 이 두 부류에 속합니다.
영어에서 온 것 같은 표현 (제 짐작)
1.
독점적으로 말하다
To monopolize the conversation
(누군가 한 명 계속 말할 때)
- That new guy in our study group is so full of hot air.
- Yeah, I wish he wouldn’t always monopolize the conversation like that.
2.
장난 아냐
It’s no joke
(이 표현은 몇 년 전까지만 해도 없었던 것 같은데 이제 한국어에서도 생겼어요)
- I’m thinking about moving to China to teach English.
- How much do you value your health? The smog in China is no joke, man.
- Have you heard that guy play piano?
- Yeah, he’s no joke.
3.
To not see the forest for the trees
나무를 보고 숲을 못 보다
(작은, 하찮은 일에 초점을 두고 크고 중요한 일을 놓치다)
- Stop worrying about how to study and just study! You’re not seeing the forest for the trees.
4.
나사 풀린 것 같아요
To have a few loose screws
(제정신이 아닌 상태를 가리키는 속된 말)
- Have you met the new art teacher? He’s kind of wacky.
- Yeah, I think that guy has a few screws loose.
5.
상아탑 아성
Ivory tower (of education)
(학계와 일반인들의 사이를 표현하는 말)
I think Professor Park needs to climb down from his ivory tower and see what life is really like for the unemployed masses.

빙산의 일각이다: the tip of the iceberg
틈새 시장: a niche market
소음 공해: noise pollution
백만불짜리 미소: a million-dollar smile
위성 도시: satellite city
마녀 사냥: witch hunt
아이폰을 탈옥시키다: To jailbreak an iPhone
적자 / 흑자: In the red / In the black
개해엄: dog paddle

6.
머리 식히다
To cool one’s head
(화나거나 흥분됐을 때 잠깐 숨을 돌리고 다시 이성을 회복하는 시간)
- I hate our boss. I’m so sick of this job. I’m quitting right now.
- I think you need to take a minute and cool your head before you do something you’ll regret.
7.
한 방울도 안 마신다
To not even drink a drop (of alcohol)
(술 정말 안 마시는 사람에 대해서 쓰는 표현)
- So, your grandfather is a devout Christian?
- Yeah, I’ve never seen him drink even a drop of alcohol.
8.
고개를 빳빳이 들다
Keep your head up
(누군가 힘들어할 때 힘내라는 의미로 씀)
After all the trouble I’ve caused, I just don’t know if I can even show my face at work again.
You did what you thought was best for the company. Keep your head up, man.
9. 볼 면목 없다 / 볼 엄두 못 내다 / 사실을 직시하다 / 직면하다
(전세계적으로 사람들이 창피한 일을 저질렀을 때 주변 사람들 얼굴을 못 봐서 이러한 비슷한 표현들이 많아요)
가족을 볼 면목이 없다
I can’t face my family
- After what got said last time, I just don’t think I can face my father.
- I’m so embarrassed about how the presentation went. I don’t know how I’ll even be able to face the boss again.
(약간 다른 쓰임세)
현실을 직시하다
To face the facts
- At this point in my life, I never imagined I would still be living hand to mouth, stuck in a dead-end job, and driving a rickety 1981 Datsun pickup.
- I think it’s high time you took a critical look at the decisions you’ve made and face the fact that you may be mostly responsible for how your life has turned out.
10.
공포 자체다
Horror itself
(일종의 강조법)
- Did you see “The Ring”?
- Yeah, that movie is horror itself?
- Rich people who evade taxes by hiding their money in overseas accounts disgust me.
- True. It’s greed itself.
