1. What kind of…?
이 유형은 주로 어떤 종류에 대해서 물어볼 때 쓰지만 돈에 대해서 이야기할 때는 ‘얼마나’같은 역할을 해줍니다.
What kind of music do you listen to?
What kind of food do you like?
What kind of grades did you get last semester?
What kind of people do you like?
What kind of people do you normally date?
A: Hey, bro. Do you think you could lend me some money?
B: What kind of money are we talking about here?
2. How … of you!
이 유형은 문자 그대로 하면 한국어의 ‘얼마나 (친절)했으면…’하고 비슷한데 그냥 ‘정말 (형용사)하네요’처럼 쓰시면 돼요.
좋은 의미로
How thoughtful of you!
How kind of you!
A: Oh! Are those for me?
How sweet of you!
B: You didn’t think I’d forgotten our anniversary, did you?
안 좋은 의미로
How mean of you!
How cruel of you!
How thoughtless of you!
3. Don’t worry about…
상대방에게 ‘신경 쓰지 말라’고 하거나 ‘그렇게 안 해도 돼요’라고 말하고 싶으면 이 유형을 쓰면 됩니다.
Don’t worry about it.
Don’t worry about paying me back for dinner.
Don’t worry about cleaning that up.
Don’t worry about washing the dishes tonight. I’ll take care of them.
A: Don’t worry about picking the kids up after school. I’ll do it.
B: Oh, really? How sweet of you!
4. Why don’t we…?
누구나 제안할 때 쓰는 말로 ‘let’s ~’를 알지만 이 유형은 비슷한 역할을 해 주는데 좀 더 부드러운 말투입니다.
Why don’t we stop by the mall after school?
Why don’t we grab a burger after work?
Why don’t we just take the subway so we can avoid traffic?
A: Why don’t we finish this up so we can go home early?
B: Man, you’re always looking for a way to leave early.
5. Why don’t you…?
상대방한테 뭔가 권유할 때 이 표현을 쓰면 되는데 주의하지 않으면 따지는 말처럼 들릴 수 있어요. 그래서 이럴 때는 억양이 중요합니다.
Why don’t you give it another try?
Why don’t you give it another shot?
Why don’t you try a little harder?
Why don’t you say you’re sorry?
Why don’t you just leave me alone?
Why don’t you just mind your own business?
6. Why don’t you ever…?
위 표현과 달리 이 유형은 분명히 따지는 말투입니다. 상대방의 태도에 대해서 불만을 표현할 때 쓰는 말이에요. 한국어의 ‘왜 절대 ~ 안 해?’와 비슷한 느낌이에요.
Why don’t you ever admit you’re wrong?
Why don’t you ever stop bragging?
A: Why don’t you ever just move on?
B: What? You’re the one that always holds a grudge.
