To be of help란?

영어에서는 주로 형용사 앞에 그냥 ‘is’ 넣는 게 기본 유형입니다. ‘He is smart,’ ‘She is amazing,’라는 문장들은 바로 그런 예이죠. 그러나 형용사 대신에 명사를 쓰고 그 앞에 ‘of’를 넣으면 형용사 같은 역할이 될 수도 있습니다. 영어 원어민들이 하는 말을 들어보면 ‘It was of great help,’와 ‘I hope to be of assistance,’라는 말을 접한 적이 있으실 겁니다.

 

예외도 있겠지만 원칙적으로 명사를 가지고 ‘-ful’를 붙이면 형용사형을 만들 수 있다면 앞에 ‘of’를 넣어서 같은 의미를 지니는 표현을 만들 수 있습니다. 예를 들어서 ‘It is beautiful,’은 문법적으로 아무런 문제 없지만 좀 더 세련된 말투를 쓰고 싶으면 ‘It is a work of great beauty’라고 하시면 됩니다. 비슷한 맥락에서 ‘It was very helpful’ 대신에 ‘It was of great help’라고 하시면 됩니다.  이 유형은 특별한 의미 없고 보통 형용사형과 같다고 생각하시면 돼요.

• This is an important issue.
• This is an issue of great import.

(‘import’와 ‘importance’은 같은 의미인데 이 유형으로 말할 때 ‘import’가 더 잘 어울려요)

• He is very talented.
• He is a man of great talent.

• She is a very capable woman.
• She is a woman of great capability.

어떨 때는 ‘of’형만 맞습니다.

• This is a work of great scale.
• (x) This is a great-scale work.

• This is an undertaking of immense potential.
• (x) This is a high-potential undertaking.
