기초 영어 회화 8편: 원어민처럼 자기소개하기!

기초 영어 회화 8편:

Introducing yourself in (more natural) English!

Hello, everyone.
My name is ~ .

Avoid overuse of “actually.”
It has almost become a fad word in Korea, like “paradigm shift,” “global leader” and “know-how.”

Where are you from?
Where are you originally from?

I’m originally from ~ but I grew up in ~ and now I live in ~ .
I’m originally from Denver, but I grew up in Orange County, California. Now I live in Seoul.

What do you do?
I’m actually still in college.

Where do you go?
Where do you go to school?
I go to Yonsei.

Avoid overuse of “hometown.”
Instead, use “originally from” or “back home.”

I’m back home.
I’m back in Denver.
I’ll be back in Denver for a few weeks.
I have to get gifts for some friends back home.
I miss my friends from back home.

Awkward expression: What is your hobby?
Instead use, “Do you have any hobbies?”

Avoid overuse of the word “hobby.”
Instead, use “free time activity” or “spare time activity”

What do you do in your free time?
What do you do in your spare time?

Strengths and Weaknesses

I’m good at / I’m bad at
I’m good at making friends.
I’m good at public speaking.
I’m not very good at

I enjoy surfing, but I’m not very good at it.

Avoid using “I’m poor at” in this context.

Do you have any brothers or sisters?
Do you have any siblings?

Introducing Oneself!
Hi, everyone.
My name is Michael and I’ve been living in Korea on and off for almost 10 years now.
I’m originally from Denver, Co., but I spent a lot of my childhood in California and now I live in Shinchon.
I went to CalArts, where I majored in music composition.
In my free time, I enjoy studying Korean proverbs and reading history books.

Michael
