오늘의 표현 45: ‘피장파장’을 영어로!

‘피장파장’이 큰 파장을 일으키고 있네요! ㅎㅎ
대부분 한국사람들은 제가 언급한 상황에서 ‘쎄임쎄임’이라는 말 쓴다는 걸 알겠지만 그 말은 영어도 아니고 한국어도 아닌 표현이라서 순한국어 표현을 썼습니다. 제 요점은 ‘Now we’re even’이라는 영어 표현을 물론 상대방의 빚을 갚았을 때도 쓸 수 있지만 그것보다 더 많이 쓸 수 있는 상황은 상대방이 나한테 어떤 잘못을 했을 때 나도 똑같은 일을 하게 될 때 쓸 수 있다는 것입니다. 예를 들어서 친구가 지난번에 약속을 안 지켰는데, 이번에는 내가 약속을 어기게 됐습니다. 그때 ‘이제 우리 피장파장이다’라고 말할 수 있는 것처럼 영어로는 ‘Now we’re even’이라고 할 수 있다는 것입니다. 한국어나 영어 모두 그 이외의 다양한 용법도 있겠지만 이번 강의의 주제는 그 모든 용법을 다루는 것은 아니었습니다.

이 연재를 통해 제가 가르쳐드리고 싶은 것은 일상적으로 겪게 되는 보편적인 상황에서 어떤 영어 표현을 쓸 수 있느냐입니다. 한국어와 영어는 다른 언어이다보니 항상 1:1로 대응할 수 있는 표현이 있는 것은 아니라는 점을 잘 알고 있습니다. 한국어의 미묘한 어감에 약간 벗어나거나 어색하더라도 제가 예로 드는 상황은 다 이해할 수 있으리라 믿습니다. 그 상황에서는 이런 ‘영어 표현’을 쓰는 게 맞다는 것이고 그렇게 응용해주시기를 바랍니다!

그리고 참고로 도토리 키재기나 오십보백보라는 말은 ‘Now we’re even’이라고 옮길 수 없습니다.
