오늘의 표현 13

최근에 제 트위터를 통해서 배포한 표현 10 개를 묶어서 올립니다.평상시에 휴대폰으로나 이메일을 통해서 하루에 하나씩 이런 표현 연습을 받고 싶으면 @EnglishinKorean에 가셔서 팔로잉하시면 됩니다.

1. To drop out of school: 학교를 자퇴하다. My brother dropped out of high school after his freshman year, but somehow managed to get into Harvard.

  • If high school isn’t a good fit, you can always just drop out and get your GED.

2. Buzzkill (또는 buzz-kill): 분위기 깨는 사람. You’re really not going to have a beer with us? Why are you always being such a buzzkill (유의어: wet blanket)?

  • A: Well, my friends are having a party and I got snubbed again!
  • B: Maybe it’s because you’re always such a buzzkill. Why don’t you take a look at your personality.

3. What’s with you today? / 너 오늘 왜 그래? 예문: Why’d you yell at John like that? He was just kidding around. What’s with you today?

  • A: Give me back my notes and get out of my room!
  • B: Geez, man. What’s with you today?

4. Pick a fight: 시비 걸다. A: Why are you trying to pick a fight with me? B: I’m not. I just think it’s a bad idea to wear a t-shirt to a job interview.

  • I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to pick a fight with that guy. He’s a kickboxing champ.

5. 맨붕: a mental breakdown. A: I’m on the verge of a mental breakdown. B: Really? You’d better take a few days off and get yourself straight.

  • This workload is killing me. I’m on the verge of a mental breakdown.

6. Don’t jump to conclusions: 속단하지 마. A: I saw you with another woman yesterday! How could you? B: Don’t jump to conclusions. That was my cousin.

  • A: Who’s this girl you’ve been texting all the time?
  • B: Don’t jump to conclusions. She’s just my student.

7. To busk: 거리에서 공연/연주하다. 예문: We went busking yesterday on the Boulder Mall.

  • I used to busk in downtown during my high school days, but we never made very much money.

8. To show someone the ropes: (신입,초보자 등에게) 요령을 가르쳐주다. A: I’ll show her the ropes. B:Why are you suddenly being so helpful? She must be hot.

  • No one was around to show me the ropes when I started here. I pretty much had to fend for myself.

9. 폐를 끼치다: to impose (on someone). A: Why don’t you stay for dinner? B: I don’t know about that. We’d hate to impose.

  • I’m really sorry we just stopped by without notice like this. I really hate to impose.

10. 임자 만나다: to meet one’s match. I thought John was stingy, but now it looks like he’s met his match. Sara cuts her own hair to save money.

  • A: She’s one of the coldest women I’ve ever met, but John’s pretty chilly too.
  • B: Yeah, maybe she’s finally met her match.

Tip

1. 오늘의 영어 팁: 동사 ‘leave(떠나다)’는 ‘to’가 아니라 ‘for’와 같이 씁니다. 따라서 ‘When do you leave to the US?’는 틀리고 ‘When do you leave for the US?’가 맞습니다.

I’ll be leaving for the US next week. Then it’s goodbye for at least three years.
