그때 그때 발음이 달라지는 영어

영어에 하나의 독특한 단어 부류가 있는데 hetoronyms이라고 합니다. 이 단어들은 동사형으로 나타날 때와 명사형으로 나타날 때의 발음이 다릅니다.  평소에도 영어의 단음과 장음(mess와 mace, less와 lace 등) 구별을 힘들어하는 한국인에게 이게 더욱 골치 아픈 문제일 것 같지만 영어를 정확하게 하시려면 알아두시는 게 좋습니다. 한글에서는 한 단어의 역할에 따라 발음이 달라지는 경우 특히 생각이 나는 게 없지만 한자를 보면 그럴 경우가 많죠. 대표적인 예는 金 김과 金금이겠죠.

영어에서는 원칙적으로 한 단어의 명사형으로 쓸 때 마지막 모음 소리가 짧아지고 동사형으로 나오면 마지막 음절이 길어져요. 예를 들어서 ‘언제 졸업하냐’고 물어불 때 ‘When are you going to graduate?’이라고 하시면 되는데 마지막 음절을 어떻게 발음을 하셨어요? ‘잇’으로 읽었어요? 아님 ‘에트’로 읽었어요? 동사형이니까 맞는 발음은 장음인 ‘에트’죠. ‘I just ate dinner’할 때 ‘ate’와 똑같습니다.

반면에 ‘그는 연대 경영대 출신이야’라고 하면 ‘He’s a graduate of Yonsei Business School,’라고 하시면 되고 마지막 음절은 ‘it’처럼 해서 ‘그레쥬잇’하고 비슷합니다.

Estimate

Alternate
You need to try to alternate your intonation more when you speak. (알터네이트) (번갈아하다)
He was an alternate for the role of the Phantom.  (알터닛) (명사: 대역)

Minute
He is famous for his 10-minute lecture series on YouTube. (미넛) (명사: 분)
We lack the time to get into these minute issues at this point. (마이누트) (형용사: 세부적인)

Moderate
He is considered a political moderate. (머더릿) (명사: 의견이 온건한 사람)
He was chosen to moderate the debate. (머더레이트) (동사: 사회를 보다)

Duplicate
This file is a duplicate. (두플리킷) (명사: 사본)
I need you to duplicate this file for me. (두플리케이트) (동사: 복사하다)

아래 단어들은 동사형으로 쓸 때 위에처럼 마지막 음절을 길게 하는데 다만 짧게 하면 명사가 아니라 형용사가 돼요

Deliberate
That was a deliberate attempt to escalate the situation. (델리버릿) (형용사: 의도적인)
The jury must remember to deliberate the facts of this case in a methodical, cool-headed fashion. (델리버레트) (심사숙고하다)

Separate
This is a separate matter and should be dealt with accordingly. (세퍼릿) (별도인)
He attempted to separate fact from fiction. (세퍼레트) (동사: 분리하다)

이 다음 단어들도 역할에 따라 발음이 달라지는데 앞 음절에 발음 차이 납니다.

Subject
It is a major psychological risk to subject children to such violence. (강세 차이: subJECT) (동사: 당하게하다)
What is the subject in this sentence? (SUBject) (명사: 주어)

Tear
Tear the paper into two equal portions. (테르) (찢다)
A single tear rolled down his cheek. (티르) (눈물)

Bow
Dressed in a hanbok for the Lunar New Year’s holiday, I gave a deep bow to my grandmother. (바우) (절)
The Hun warrior was as good as dead once he was without his bow. (보) (활)

Contest
I contest the results of this election. (강세 차이: conTEST) (동사: 항의하다)
This contest is rigged. (CONtest) (명사: 대회, 대결, 선거 등)

Rebel
That man is a true rebel. (레벌) (반항아)
I think it’s high time we rebel against this tyranny. (리벨) (동사: 반항하다)

Wound
This cable needs to be wound up and put away. (와운드) (형용사: 감은)
This old wound will never heal. (워운드) (명사: 상처)
