동사구 “Make out”을 살펴봅시다
영어의 많은 동사구가 그렇듯이 “Make out”도 문맥상 해석할 수 있는 방법이 참 많아요.
가장 대표적인 세 가지 의미는 아래와 같습니다.
1. (제일 흔한 쓰임새) 남자와 여자가 키스하고 스킨쉽한다는 의미.
주의: 스킨쉽이라는 말도 미국에서 쓰지 않는 콩글리쉬지만…
예문:
Do you know what all the buzz is about?
Yeah, there’s a rumor going around that Jenny and Tom made out last night at the prom.
But Tom is already going out with Sara!
I know. That guy is such a player.
다들 웬 호들갑이야?
어제 파티에서 제니하고 톰이 키스했다는 소문이 돌고 있어.
근데 톰은 세라랑 사귀고 있잖아!
그러니까. 그 애 완전 선수잖아.
선수: a player (이 표현이 영어에서 온 것 같네요)
2. 난해하거나 잘 안 보이는 것을 이해하다.
Can you make out what’s written on that sign across the street?
Nope, the writing is too small. I can’t tell what it says.
길 맞은 편에 있는 간판에 뭐라고 써 있는지 보여?
아니, 글씨가 너무 작아. 뭐라고 써 있는지 모르겠네.
My student’s handwriting is such a mess I can’t make out what he wrote here. Can you make it out?
No way. You let your kids hand in homework like that? I would punish him. That’s ridiculous!
내 학생이 쓴 글씨가 너무 엉망이라서 여기 뭐라 썼는지 모르겠어. 넌 알아 보겠니?
하나도 모르겠어. 애들이 그렇게 숙제를 내도 넌 그냥 가만히 있어? 나 같으면 혼내줄 거야. 이 정도면 말도 안 되는 거야.
3. (거래 따위에서) 해내다 또는 챙기다
I heard a lot of money changed hands in the waterfront development project. How’d you make out?
We did all right, but I was definitely hoping for more.
강변 개발 사업에 거액이 오갔다면서? 재미 좀 봤어? (너도 돈 좀 챙겼어?)
웬만큼. 훨씬 더 많이 기대하긴 했지만.
참조: Waterfront라는 단어는 물 (강, 바다, 호수)앞이라는 뜻입니다. 그대로 한자로 옮기면 “수전” (水前) 이지만 한국어에 그런 말이 없으니까 강이라고 생각하고 “강변”이라고 합시다.
