Hi Michael, I happened to read your story on Los Angeles
version of The Korean Times this morning (1-08-11). Your website is
one of the best one for Koreans who want to learn live daily
English, I really mean it. Hopefully people appreciate your efforts
and sincerity. You got my respect at least. Have a happy and
healthy New Year and good luck to you. Jack ( My friends call me
Jackchino) Rhee Diamond Bar FYI, As you can tell, I’m not a native
speaker and still pick up new words, expressions everyday.

how about ‘band of brothers’?

User Gravatar
Michael said in January 13th, 2011 at 2:01 pm

I’ve never seen “Band of Brothers” myself, but a lot of people say good things about it. As a treatment of WWII, I doubt many women will be interested in it, but men tend to relate to war stories well. There’s probably not any slang in the dialogue, so that would be a good thing in terms of language learning.

I have been wrestling with English for more than 22 years. The more I have been studying, The even much more difficult it has been. What I feel difficult the most in learning it is to understand what the native Americans speak in the movie or on TV. How can I improve my listening ability? One Question.

You can come up with korean speakers when you watch Korean soap opera on Korean TV?

Many Thanks

Kim

Nice meeting you.

You are asking whether I can understand Korean soap operas, right?
Yes I can, but I understand the news better because I used to be a newspaper translator.

As far as a method for study goes, you should download the shows so that you can listen over and over again.
The most important thing is repetition. You should watch the same show at least three times, and whenever you can’t catch what is being said, you should stop and rewind. If you can find the script online, that’s even better. Write down any new phrases that you learn and then memorize them.

Hope that helps!

Oh, I’m surprised you didn’t recommend “Friends”.
The reason I thought like that is because the sitcom is very well known in Korea as learning materials in English.
What do you think about “Friends” ??
Is it also hard to understand about their jokes and storys??
leave your reply for me please.

Hi.

“Friends” is a fun show too. I just didn’t have time to write about all the shows I enjoy yet and I was starting with shows that are less known in korea.
The one thing to remember, though, as I’ve mentioned above, is that comedy is usually the hardest to understand. Other than that, I think it could be a great show to use when learning English.

Good luck!

Why am I going to leave a message at this hour? (It’s 4:10 a.m. Monday !!) I am truly fascinated by your Korean. Which naturally led to curiosity about the blogger of this remarkable home page. However, myself having been a strong advocate for international comity, I have just killed my kittenish curiosity. ^^

As a diligent learner of English as a second language, I have found the following American DVDs quite helpful in my endeavor:

1. Boston Legal.

2. Ancient Rome; the rise and fall of an empire

3. Ally McBeal

4. Friends

5. Sex and the City.

The recommended list of yours is also helpful; I will have to try them. You seem to have chosen the listed dramas that are not so well-known to Koreans as yet. Thank you for that. This site is a gem.

Thanks.

Hi Michael,

Great selections! How about “Six Feet Under” and “Weeds?” For me, producer/writer Alan Ball did such a great job with “Six Feet Under.” Watching the dysfunctional Fishers is a guilty pleasure, but in the end the show delivers life-affirming messages without preaching. I was so taken by the show and had to buy the entire 5 season DVD set! The series finale is one of the best, of course. “Weeds” is so funny and acerbic as well. The show has become a little too absurd as it gets near its ending, but there are so many memorable characters including crazy Celia and super-laid-back Andy.

For female empowerment, I would recommend “The Closer” and “Saving Grace.”

Thank you for what you are doing on this website and elsewhere.
Cheers,
Elena

The Office

I thought conversational English myself. I remember what my middle school teacher once said, “Learn English until you dream in English!” Two years of crazy hard work, that started to happen, and from there, things became so much easier. Back when I was learning English, there were two 20 min. long radio program, and a few conversational books. Between taking advantage of what was available as such, my other methods were magazines, one American channel that was available for US forces in Korea. Luckily, my middle school English teacher I had had an excellent English native tongue – I picked up those problem letters to most Koreans; e.g., L, R, V, P, W, what have you with no issues what so ever. Lucky me! what helped me mostly was speaking out loud, not just listen and before I knew, I found myself thinking in English. Learning language takes time, great commitment, and desire – but as long as you have fun with it, that’s half of the huddle out of the way. So, friends, I admire everyone here, and trust there’s light at the end of the tunnel. With such an amazing teacher like Michael, it’ll just be a matter of time! Happy learning! ;-)
